Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

With a tight tongue-tie that causes problems with breastfeeding, eating or speech, clipping can make it easier for the tongue to move. The band under the tongue is cut with scissors or a laser. Older children and adults may need a slightly larger operation.

The clipping is usually done once. The doctor decides whether you or your child need a check-up or more help, for example with breastfeeding or speech.

  1. The doctor examines the tongue-tie and assesses whether it causes problems.
  2. The area is numbed if needed.
  3. The band is cut, and babies can often feed straight afterwards.

The clipping itself takes only a moment.
